AMD has shown its 3D-chip expectations for 2009 during the Japanese Ceatec-convention. AMD will transit to the 40nm production process, confirming earlier rumors. The 40nm 3D-chips could be part of the Fusion processor, which will combine a CPU and GPU in a single chip. AMD also expects the first DirectX 11-compatible 3D-chips in 2009, it's likely that DirectX 11 will be released simultaneously with Microsoft Windows 7.
DirectX 11 and OpenCL should allow General Purpose GPU (GPGPU) to develop further. The concept of the GPGPU makes it possible for the 3D-chips to take over processor tasks that can be done more effectively by a 3D-chip. AMD also thinks GDDR5-memory will be used a lot more in 2009. This memory is currently only being used on the high-end ATI Radeon HD 4870 and 4870 X2 graphics cards, but will also be featured on other cards throughout the upcoming year.
