Alienware has just introduced the Core i7-powered Area-51 X-58 and ALX X-58 gaming systems. Starting at $1,349, the Area-51 X-58 can be equipped with Core i7 920 (2.66GHz), 940 (2.93GHz) or Core i7 Extreme (3.2GHz) Core i7 CPUs, a X58 motherboard, up to 12GB DDR3 1066 MHz memory, at least a Radeon HD 4670 graphics card, 2TB of storage and even a 4x Blu-Ray writer.

Core i7 dated for November 17th

Intel will launch its Core i7 processors at a press event in San Francisco on the 17th of this month and already we have pricing estimates sliding off whispering lips. Distributors buying in bulk will pay a modest $284 for the 2.66GHz Core i7-920, $562 for the 2.93GHz 940, and $999 for the 3.2GHz Extreme 965 -- consumers will pay more of course, but we don't know exactly how much. Even the 920 squarely defeated the Core 2 Quad Q9650 in benchmarks, and we'll admit we had fun playing with the 965 over the weekend. As for those of you who haven't been so lucky, your chance to run up that credit card debt is fast approaching.

Intel discontinues 13 processors

As the launch of the Core i7 generation is nearing, Intel is clearing the field in the product line-up. Intel grants the EOL status to 13 processors by the end of this year. The processors, under which eight dualcore and five quadcores, do not just include 65nm models, some of the 45nm 'Penryn' CPU's will also be discontinued already.


Production will stop on the 65nm E6850, E6750, E6650 and E4600 dualcores. In the 45nm line-up, the affected models are the E8300, E8200 and E8190. In the second quarter of 2009, the E4700 will also be removed from the line-up.

The first Yorkfield quadcore will go EOL in early 2009

Of the quadcores, the immensely popular Q6600 and it's big brother the Q6700 will be phased out in the first quarter of 2009. A remarkable thing is that Intel will already cancel the production on it's latest 45nm quadcores, considering the fact that their availability wasn't optimal until March this year.The first 45nm Yorkfield to clear the field is the Q9450, which will be followed by the Q9750 and QX9770 in the second quarter of 2009. These holes will be filled with respectively the entry-model Core i7 920 and the 3.2 GHz Core i7 965.

Intel Core i7 920, 940 and 965 models

While some companies are already out there promising Core i7-based gear, we haven't yet heard many official specifics about the actual processors that'll be at the heart of them. That's now changed in a pretty big way, however, with some supposedly authentic leaked materials revealing the complete spec list and some pricing details. Apparently, you can expect Core i7 920, 940 and 965 models to roll out in November, with 'em clocking in at 2.66GHz, 2.93GHz, and 3.2GHz, respectively. Each, as expected, are quad-core, 45nm processors, and each boast the same 8MB of shared L3 cache, 256kb of L2 cache per core, and TDP rating of 130W. No word on individual unit pricing just yet, but it looks like the Core i7 920 will run $284 in quantities of 1,000, with Core i7 940 upping things considerably to $562, and the "extreme" Core i7 965 demanding a hefty $999.
